Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta

The beautiful 15th-century cathedral, dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption, a national monument since 1902, graces Ostuni's historic centre, perched on the town's highest hilltop.

Restored in the late 1400s in the aftermath of a strong earthquake, the cathedral features a three-portal façade, topped by three rose windows, of which the central one is a triumph of medieval symbology, divided into 24 segments by stone mullions and tracery with the figure of Christ in the middle holding the earth in his hand as a sign of protection, surrounded by the Apostles and seven heads of cherubs.

The interior presents a Latin-cross layout, with three naves separated by five-column arches. In the central nave are displayed three beautiful 18th-century paintings, depicting scenes from the life of Jesus, set into the ceiling, as well as fascinating paintings dedicated to the saint patron St. Orontius and to the martyrdom of St. Blaise. A must-be-there event is the Ride of St. Orontius (Cavalcata di Sant'Oronzo) during which knights and horses dressed in costumes parade through the historic centre.
