Co-Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta

The bell tower heralds the majestic presence of the Co-Cathedral of Ruvo di Puglia, the town's most important religious monument, dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta.
Built between the 12th and the 13th centuries, the Cathedral combines the Gothic-Swabian style with elements of Puglia’s Romanesque architecture, and features a sloped façade, mullioned windows and a large Renaissance rose window. The three portals are framed by three false arches supported by columns, embellished with leafy decoration and anthropomorphic and zoomorphic motifs.

The Latin Cross interior, divided into two aisles and a nave, is a small treasure trove of art. It houses a significant collection of statues and the Cathedral’s precious treasure, which includes silver artefacts such as the statue of Saint Rocco, a monstrance and sacred vestments.

The cathedral’s hypogeum, which was only brought back to light during a restoration in the early 20th century, safeguards an important archeological patrimony, with tombs, paved floors and mosaics dating to the Peucetii, Roman, and Early Medieval eras.
